Aha! I found it. And the other essay I was looking for. That wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be. Anyhow, this essay on aspecies resonated with me a bunch the first time I read it (the second one, which is about non-humanity and disability, is a really interesting perspective). I remembered this first piece because of this line here: "it's something that's defined so much by what it isn't rather than what it is."

I just don't see this sort of, negation, I suppose you could call it that, very often from alterhuman communities, and it's what has kept me away from them. You see more beings going, "I am x", rather than "I am not x, y, or z", in other words. I had the same type of otherkin questioning phase the author went through and came up with a similar conclusion of them all being incorrect. I'm not one-to-one with the author, I have an actual physical appearance in headspace. But, I apply no positive label to that. I am nothing in particular. The negative space against the positive space of humanity, non-human species, object, or concept.
